Welcome
The 2008-2009 school year is setting up to be extremely exciting and we are looking forward to being an important part of our student's academic career. The John D. O’Bryant African American Institute, as a part of student affairs, has positioned itself within Northeastern to play a significant role in supporting African American students and providing services and programs to increase opportunities for academic success, civic engagement and social inspiration. Our mission is to provide culturally focused programs, resources, services, and activities that nurture and contribute to the academic success of students of African origin at Northeastern University.
We are very excited this year to have as a program at the Institute for the first time the long standing Legacy Mentoring Program. Our mission will continue to be carried out through exciting programs, services and cultural activities that include:
- Ujima Scholars Program – Serves as an access, recruitment and retention program
- The Legacy Mentoring/Retention Program – A student retention collaborative
- Counseling/Tutoring Services – Student personal and academic support
- Reggie Lewis Technology Center – Student computer lab
- MLK Graduate Fellowship – Graduate student support
Our signature cultural programs and activities include the Diaspora dinner, Kwanzaa celebration, our unity Gospel Choir Concert, the MLK Convocation, the Oratory Competition, Black History Quiz Bowl, Unity Day on the Common, Unity Awards Banquet, and the baccalaureate ceremony.
The John D. O'Bryant African-American Institute staff and affiliated faculty are prepared to support our students and make the experience at Northeastern a pleasurable and fulfilling one.
